This research is dedicated to Mary-Lou Benard (1940–2024).
“Rewilding Gottesman Plaza” was a recipient of the 2023 Harvard GSD Real Estate Grant. The research operates where real estate meets climate action. Utilizing a real case study in New York City, the objectives of the research were to identify green funding sources to support adaptation, urban resilience, and ecological restoration projects in NYC; create a cost analysis comparison for the plaza’s demolition versus renovation; develop a financial framework to serve similar properties throughout NYC; and design a landscape framework that addresses the site’s most urgent climate change risks, namely heat events increasing in both frequency and duration.
