The design for the SCI-Arc Expansion distinguishes
the architectural learning environment from other
pedagogic archetypes. It epitomizes the studio space as
a catalyst for discourse and architectural production. In
order to maximize the interactivity between studios and
other programs, the design sought to physically intersect
the building volumes and thus spatially dramatize
the programmatic adjacencies. The studios encircle a
volume housing the library, auditorium, and gallery—
programs that enrich and influence the discourse and
design projects within the school. By combining the
formal ambitions of the aggregate building typology
with programmatic intention, the physical identity of the project
remains tied to the pedagogical identity of SCI-Arc.
